Poppins Payroll lost household employers' and employees' records through a flaw in Metabase, the analytics software it uses, from September 2 to 3, 2026. The California notice names no data elements and no count; an accompanying summary lists Social Security numbers, birth dates, wage records, and banking data for thousands across several states. A dashboard tool sat close enough to payroll to read all of it. The reporting layer became the perimeter, and nobody guarded it as one.
